A Step Forward: Our Commitment to People, Planet, and Craft
A Journey Shaped by Choices
From the first ideas behind BY TONIN, every choice has been guided by our vision of creating jewellery that respects people, communities, and the environment. Who we collaborate with, how we craft each piece, and the thought we put into every step all leave an impact.
Responsibility isn’t just about materials or methods. It’s about people, communities, the environment, and the care behind everything we do, with progress unfolding gradually through small, intentional steps.
We’re humbled to share that BY TONIN has been endorsed by Fair & Good, a New Zealand platform that champions ethical consumption and supports thoughtful, responsible choices that benefit the people behind the products. A small step, but one that matters as we keep moving forward.
OUR COMMITMENTS
Honouring People
We work exclusively with a single, trusted manufacturing partner with no subcontracting. Every maker’s skill, wellbeing, and dignity are prioritised, with fair pay, social benefits, paid leave, and flexible arrangements that support parents. Policies strictly prohibit child labour, forced labour, harassment, and discrimination, and clear channels exist for workers to raise concerns. By supporting their growth through mentorship, skill development, and career opportunities, we strengthen communities and foster meaningful connections between maker and wearer.
Respectful and Ethical Craftsmanship
Each piece is created in partnership with makers who share our commitment to ethical practices, fair labour, and social responsibility. Every step, from sourcing to finishing, is guided by care, transparency, and accountability. ISO 9001 and Responsible Jewellery Council certifications ensure high standards of quality, safety, and ethical practice, while ISO 14001 certification reflects our attention to environmental management.
Slow and Intentional
We produce in small batches to reduce excess, minimise waste, and maintain close attention to every detail. This allows us to prioritise quality over quantity and create jewellery that is deliberate and truly considered.
Season-less Minimalist Designs
Our jewellery is created to be worn every day, in any season. Simplicity, subtle detail, and timeless forms ensure that each piece feels natural, graceful, and meaningful over time.
Extending Lifecycles
We encourage replating of gold plated and vermeil pieces and offer warranties to keep our jewellery in use for longer. By doing so, we aim to reduce unnecessary waste and honour the care invested in each piece.
Responsible Materials
Where possible, we use recycled metals and responsibly sourced materials, prioritising safety, quality, and respect for people and planet. All pieces are nickel-free and comply with global safety standards, including REACH and California Proposition 65.
Thoughtful Packaging
Our packaging is designed to minimise impact, using FSC-certified papers, recyclable mailers, reusable velvet pouches, and eco-friendly inks and adhesives. Every choice reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental footprint.
Reducing Environmental Impact
We work with partners who are ISO 14001 certified, managing resources carefully, reducing waste, and reviewing environmental practices continuously. We also acknowledge the environmental challenges in the regions where our makers live, and work responsibly to reduce harm while supporting healthier communities.
Education & Advocacy
We hope to inspire mindful consumption through education. Guidance on caring for demi-fine jewellery and making conscious wardrobe choices helps our customers extend the life and impact of every piece.
Community & Conscious Consumption
We believe in slowing down, valuing quality over quantity, and fostering a community that reflects on the impact of what they wear and how they consume.
Continuous Learning
Ethical sourcing, fair labour, and environmental care are ongoing journeys. We are committed to learning, evolving, and improving our practices each day, making each choice with care, intention, and respect for both people and planet.
A Work in Progress
Being recognised by Fair & Good is a reminder that progress happens gradually, and we’re grateful to be part of a community of brands taking intentional steps toward positive change. It also reminds us why we do what we do and inspires us to keep learning, evolving, and striving for better.
Our journey is ongoing, and we are committed to moving forward thoughtfully, guided by respect for people, communities, and the planet. We hope our approach inspires others to consider the impact of what they wear and to make small, mindful choices along the way.
