PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS
All our pieces are made using 925 sterling silver as the base metal, which we plate with 18k gold sourced from Responsible Jewellery Council accredited suppliers. Where possible, a component of the gold or silver is recycled.
We offer two types of plating:
- Gold Vermeil: Features a minimum of 2.5 microns of 18k gold plating
- Gold Plated: Features a minimum of 1 micron of 18k gold plating
We prioritise quality and durability in all our pieces. Unlike many manufacturers who use minimal plating, our gold-plated jewellery features a substantial 18k gold layer of at least 1 micron in thickness. This significant layer is specifically chosen to enhance the durability and longevity of your piece. For our vermeil pieces, we go even further, applying a minimum of 2.5 microns of 18k gold to sterling silver to provide exceptional durability and a luxurious finish.
Each piece is also finished with an e-coating, providing an additional protective layer that helps guard against tarnishing and wear. This investment in quality ensures your jewellery maintains its beautiful appearance longer with proper care.
While durable, they require careful handling to preserve its best condition. Visit our Product Care guide for more information.
Gold Vermeil is a high-quality jewellery finish that features a thick layer of 18k gold plated over a solid sterling silver base. Our vermeil pieces have at least 2.5 microns of 18k gold plating, which means they are more durable and longer-lasting than standard gold plating.
This technique combines the beauty and luxury of gold with the strength and affordability of sterling silver, making vermeil jewellery a perfect choice for those who want a lasting, elegant piece without the price of solid gold.
The distinction lies in the thickness of the gold layer. Our gold vermeil pieces feature a premium 2.5-micron minimum layer of 18k gold over sterling silver, while our gold plated pieces carry a substantial 1-micron minimum layer.
Both our gold vermeil and gold-plated options significantly exceed common industry standards (flash plating/costume jewellery), with vermeil pieces generally maintaining their gold appearance longer due to the additional thickness of the plating.
Plating thickness plays a key role in the durability and longevity of gold-plated jewellery. Our gold plating over sterling silver is at least 1 micron thick, while our vermeil pieces feature a minimum of 2.5 microns. Each piece is also finished with an innovative nano-ceramic e-coating for added protection against wear.
This thoughtful layering makes our jewellery significantly more durable than flash-plated or costume pieces, which often use ultra-thin plating that wears quickly. With proper care, BY TONIN pieces are designed to maintain their beauty and integrity for years to come.

Our standard gold-plated pieces feature a minimum of 1 micron of gold, while our vermeil pieces are layered with at least 2.5 microns. Each one is also finished with an e-coating for added protection against tarnishing and wear, ensuring it stands up to daily life with ease.
This careful layering makes our jewellery significantly more durable than flash-plated or costume pieces, which often use ultra-thin plating—as little as 0.05 microns—over brass, copper, or stainless steel. Those base metals are not only less durable, but also more likely to cause skin irritation, green marks, and premature wear.
Our gold plating:
- Uses real 18k gold
- Applied over a base of solid sterling silver
- Thickness starts at 1 micron, with our vermeil pieces reaching 2.5 microns or more
- Hypoallergenic and gentle on skin
- Designed for durability and everyday wear
Standard gold plating (as used in many fast fashion and budget-friendly pieces):
- Gold layer can be as thin as 0.05 microns
- Typically plated over brass, copper, or stainless steel
- More prone to fading, tarnishing, and skin reactions
- Often causes the green marks and irritation associated with cheap jewellery

All precious metals, including gold and silver, naturally undergo oxidation over time. While our pieces are crafted with superior plating thicknesses to enhance durability, factors such as skin chemistry, environment, and care practices can affect their appearance.
Following our Product Care guidelines helps minimise tarnishing and preserves the quality of the plating.
Our quality assurance begins with our commitment to exceeding industry standards for plating thickness. Every piece features carefully applied 18k gold plating over 925 sterling silver, with strict quality control measures throughout the manufacturing process. We maintain consistent testing of our plating thickness for every batch to ensure our high standards are met with every piece.

Our gemstones are conflict-free and sourced from Responsible Jewellery Council accredited suppliers.
Our pieces are made with sterling silver and 18k gold plating, which are generally considered kind to sensitive skin. However, individual skin sensitivities vary greatly.
If you have concerns about potential skin reactions, we recommend consulting with your medical provider or a dermatologist for personalised advice.
