Our bespoke process is a collaborative refinement. We thoughtfully strip away the unnecessary to arrive at a piece that feels intentional, enduring, and uniquely yours.

Typically, the journey from initial enquiry to final delivery takes between 8 to 10 weeks. This timeline allows for a considered design phase, the sourcing of specific RJC-certified gold or lab-grown stones, and meticulous hand-finishing. We recommend reaching out at least two months in advance for milestone gifts or wedding jewellery.

The bespoke process is a collaborative experience, which we manage entirely through email and video calls. This allows us to work with clients regardless of where they are located. If you are based in Auckland, we can also arrange to meet in person to discuss your design.

Our bespoke service is dedicated to creating everyday heirlooms. While our core collections feature premium gold plating over sterling silver (perfect for versatile, everyday layering), we choose solid gold for bespoke work to provide the level of durability and a lasting legacy that will never change over time.

The "carat" (ct) refers to the proportion of pure gold in the alloy. Because pure 24ct gold is too soft for everyday jewellery, it is mixed with other metals to provide strength and varied tones.

• 9ct Gold (37.5% Pure Gold)
  9ct gold is the most affordable and hardest-wearing option. It has a subtle, pale yellow tone because it contains a higher percentage of alloying metals like silver and copper. It is incredibly durable and resistant to scratching—ideal for those with active lifestyles or hands-on professions.
  
  
• 14ct Gold (58.5% Pure Gold)
  A popular international standard, 14ct offers a beautiful compromise. It has a richer, warmer yellow hue than 9ct while maintaining excellent structural integrity. It is significantly more durable than higher carats, offering a premium gold feel with a classic balanced colour.
  
  
• 18ct Gold (75% Pure Gold)
  The industry standard for fine jewellery and engagement rings. 18ct gold is prized for its deep, vivid yellow radiance that most closely resembles pure gold. It has a noticeable "heft" on the skin and is the most hypoallergenic option. While slightly softer than 9ct, its rich colour and density make it the traditional choice for heirloom pieces intended to last generations.

At this time, we exclusively work with stones sourced directly by BY TONIN.

To ensure the structural integrity and enduring quality of your commission, we only use materials that have been vetted through our own trusted supply chain. This allows us to guarantee the excellence and durability of the finished design, from the metal setting to the final stone placement.

We recommend lab-grown diamonds. If you prefer color, we can offer lab-grown gemstones, including Sapphires, Emeralds, and Rubies. These provide the same composition and saturation as mined stones but are created in a controlled environment.

While we can source semi-precious stones like Topaz or Zircon, we generally recommend stones with higher hardness for pieces intended to be worn for years—specifically Diamonds, Sapphires, or Rubies.

Natural Zircons, while beautiful, are more prone to wear over time. The edges can dull or chip with heavy daily use. For a piece designed to last, we prioritise high-durability options to ensure the stone remains as it was on the first day. We also offer Freshwater and South Sea pearls for those who prefer a softer, organic form.

Yes. We use lab-grown diamonds as they are chemically and physically identical to mined stones, offering a more transparent and ethical path to modern luxury.

The only difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds is their origin. Physically, chemically, and optically, they are identical.

The Physical Reality

• Composition: Both are made of pure carbon organised in a crystal lattice structure.
• Durability: Both rate 10 on the Mohs scale. A lab-grown diamond is just as scratch-resistant and permanent as a mined one.
• Appearance: They have the same refractive index and "sparkle." Even a trained gemologist cannot tell them apart with a jeweler’s loupe; it requires specialized laboratory equipment to identify the growth origin.

Why We Choose Lab-Grown

• Transparency: Lab-grown stones offer a clear, traceable supply chain. We know exactly where the stone comes from and the conditions under which it was produced.
• Quality: Because they are grown in a controlled environment, we can source stones with high clarity and color standards more consistently.

The Mined Alternative

Mined diamonds are formed deep within the earth over billions of years. While they share the same physical properties, the primary appeal of a mined diamond today is its rarity as a natural finite resource.

We can source high-quality Moissanite for your commission if it is your preferred choice. Moissanite is a durable alternative with a distinct brilliance, suited to those seeking a specific look or value.

The choice between Moissanite and Diamond (specifically lab-grown) usually comes down to how you want the stone to behave and your preference for value.

Lab-Grown Diamond
This is the standard for bespoke jewellery. It is physically identical to a mined diamond, consisting of pure carbon.

• The Sparkle: It reflects a classic, crisp white light.
• The Strength: It is a 10 on the Mohs scale, making it the hardest material available. It is essentially impossible to scratch, ensuring the edges of the stone stay sharp for decades.

Moissanite
This is a high-quality alternative made of silicon carbide. While it looks similar to a diamond at a glance, it behaves differently in the light.

• The Sparkle: It is more refractive than a diamond, meaning it has more "fire." In bright sunlight, it will show prominent rainbow flashes.
• The Strength: It is a 9.25 on the Mohs scale. While slightly below a diamond, it is still harder than sapphire or ruby and is more than durable enough for daily wear.

Which should you choose?

Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond if:
You want the traditional look of a diamond. It has a depth and a specific type of white light reflection that remains the standard for bespoke jewellery. It is the most durable option for a piece you intend to wear every single day for decades.

Choose Moissanite if:
You prefer a more vibrant, colourful sparkle. Moissanite is double-refractive, meaning it catches the light differently and can appear more "extra" than a diamond. It is an excellent choice if you want a larger stone or a specific silhouette while maintaining a lower price point.

Both stones sit naturally in our solid gold settings. Because both are created in controlled environments, they align with the BY TONIN focus on transparency and considered material choices.

Some designs require a different choice of materials to fit your lifestyle. Our Modified Classics Service allows you to update our existing collections into solid gold, tailored specifically to your preference.

This service is for those who find a silhouette they love but wish to refine the details to better suit their daily needs.

Common modifications include:

• Material Upgrades: Transitioning a standard design into 9ct, 14ct, or 18ct solid gold.
• Stone Swaps: Replacing a colored gemstone with a lab-grown diamond, or swapping a Freshwater pearl for a South Sea pearl.
• Scale Adjustments: Increasing or decreasing the size of a gemstone or the thickness of a ring band to suit your proportions.
• Custom Measurements: Adjusting necklace lengths or bracelet sizing for a precise fit.

By moving our core designs into solid gold and selecting high-durability stones, you ensure your piece is built for daily wear and remains a permanent part of your rotation.

Accuracy is essential for bespoke work. If you are based in New Zealand, we can send you a complimentary physical ring sizer once your deposit is confirmed.

For our international clients, we provide a digital sizing guide and can recommend local professional sizing methods to ensure your solid gold piece sits perfectly from the moment it arrives.

YES. Most bespoke commissions are for surprises or significant life events. We treat every design journey with the utmost discretion and can coordinate delivery to ensure the surprise remains intact.

Once you approve the CAD design and we begin casting in solid gold, we are unable to make structural changes. We use our collaborative design phase to ensure every detail is refined and approved before we start the physical creation of your piece.

Because we work in solid gold, most of our rings can be resized. However, some designs, like full-eternity bands or specific textures, have limitations. To ensure the right fit from the start, we can provide a ring sizer before we begin.

For lab-grown diamonds of 0.50 carat and above, we source stones accompanied by an independent grading report from the IGI or GIA. These certificates verify the stone’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

For stones under 0.50 carat, we do not typically provide individual certification. Independent grading involves administrative fees that can become disproportionate to the value of smaller stones.

By forgoing individual paperwork on smaller carats, we ensure the cost remains focused on the quality of the material rather than administrative premiums.

Our process is designed to be intentional and collaborative. Your deposit includes two rounds of adjustments during the sketching stage. After you approve the sketch, we begin the digital rendering process.

Should you require structural changes after the renders are completed, a revision fee of $150 NZD per hour will apply to cover the additional work.

Every bespoke commission is a direct collaboration with our co-founder, Mia. We believe a singular piece deserves a personal connection, so you will work one-on-one through the design consultation, material selection, and final refinement. This ensures your vision remains central to the process, resulting in a considered piece that perfectly aligns with the BY TONIN aesthetic.

We require an upfront deposit of $1000 NZD, which is fully credited toward your final piece. This deposit covers the initial consultation and custom sketching phase.

The remaining balance of your commission is due once you have approved your final quote and prior to the commencement of technical CAD rendering. Your initial deposit will be credited toward this final amount.

Please note that all quotes are valid for 24 hours only. This is due to fluctuations in the live market value of solid gold and ensures we are able to secure materials at the quoted rate.

To proceed and secure your piece at the quoted price, payment must be made within this 24-hour window. Once payment is received, your design is formally locked in for production, and we begin the high-fidelity CAD rendering process that serves as the technical blueprint for your piece.

If you need more time to decide, we absolutely understand. However, please note that we are unable to hold pricing beyond the 24-hour period. If the quote expires, it will need to be reassessed based on current material pricing at the time you are ready to proceed.

We do not use a flat-rate model. Instead, each quote is built based on the specific variables of your commission.

The primary driver of cost is the current market value of solid gold. The total weight required for your design directly influences the price. Because market rates fluctuate daily, our final quotes remain valid for 24 hours only. This window allows us to secure the raw materials at the stated price before the market shifts.

Beyond the metal, the price is determined by:

• Material Selection: The specific grade, size, and type of your chosen lab-grown diamonds, gemstones, or pearls.
• Technical Complexity: The requirements of the design itself. Intricate settings, multi-stone layouts, or complex sculptural profiles require more intensive labor during the hand-finishing stage.
• Refinement and Scale: Larger or heavier pieces require more time and raw material to ensure the structural integrity and finish meet our standards.

If you decide not to proceed before the CAD and production stage begins, $500 of the deposit is non-refundable, reflecting the time and creative work already invested into your design. The remaining $500 will be refunded.

Once your final quote is presented, there is no pressure to continue if you feel the project is no longer the right fit for you at that stage. Our intention is always to create something that feels both meaningful and aligned for everyone involved.

Please note that all bespoke concepts, sketches, and designs developed throughout the process remain the intellectual property of BY TONIN and may not be reproduced, shared with another jeweller, or used for external production.

Once the CAD stage has commenced, additional work, revisions, and technical development have already been undertaken to prepare your piece for production. If you decide not to proceed at this stage, all payments made up to this point remain non-refundable. Depending on the progress of the project, additional charges may also apply for completed CAD work, revisions, or production preparation already undertaken.

All CAD files, renders, bespoke concepts, and designs remain the intellectual property of BY TONIN and may not be reproduced, shared externally, or used for manufacturing with another jeweller.

If full payment has been made and you decide not to proceed at any stage of the process (including after CAD approval or during production), the total payment remains non-refundable. This reflects the allocation of design time, production scheduling, material sourcing, and committed craftsmanship reserved specifically for your piece.

All work completed remains the intellectual property of BY TONIN and may not be reproduced, shared with another jeweller, or used for external production under any circumstance.

Yes. Every BY TONIN bespoke piece is crafted with an emphasis on durability and quality. We stand behind our craftsmanship and offer a warranty against any manufacturing faults. Additionally, because we work in solid gold, your piece is inherently designed for a lifetime of wear.
