Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose & Layer Your Chains
The Complete Necklace Length Guide
Finding the right necklace length comes down to two elements: where you want the pendant or chain to rest, and how you intend to wear or layer it. A well-considered length sits naturally against the collarbone, neckline, or chest without twisting or tangling.
Use this guide to select the ideal chain length for your proportion, everyday wardrobe, or multi-chain layering set.
Standard Necklace Lengths & Fit
Every BY TONIN necklace is designed with intentional proportions to complement modern necklines and layered styling. All our chain necklaces feature integrated 5cm extender chains (e.g., 40cm + 5cm). This allows you to fine-tune where the piece sits depending on your clothing's neckline.
| CHAIN LENGTH | FITS LIKE | BEST WORN WITH |
|---|---|---|
| 40cm (16") | Choker / High Collarbone: Rests just above or directly on the collarbone. | High necklines, crew tees, button-down shirts left unbuttoned, or as the anchor piece in a necklace stack. |
| 45cm (18") | Princess / Standard Collarbone: Rests just below the collarbone. The most versatile standard length. | V-necks, scoop necklines, relaxed t-shirts, and standalone pendant pieces. |
| 50cm (20") | Matinee / Mid-Chest: Rests a few inches below the collarbone, above the bust. | High crew necks, knits, blazers, or as the middle anchor in a three-chain layer. |
| 55cm - 60cm (22"-24") |
Opera / Low Chest: Sits on or just below the bust line. | High-neck sweaters, turtleneck tops, or as the longest statement chain in a layered stack. |
How to Measure for the Perfect Fit
If you are unsure which length will sit best on your frame, use one of two simple home measurement methods.
Lay a well-fitting necklace flat on a flat surface. Measure the distance from one end of the clasp to the other using a flexible tape measure or ruler.
Cut a piece of string to your desired length (e.g., 45cm). Wrap it around your neck and hold the ends together where the clasp would sit. Observe where the string rests against your collarbone or chest.
Pendants pull a chain down into a natural 'V' shape rather than a rounded curve. Add 1cm to 3cm to your target resting point to account for the drop of a pendant or freshwater pearl.
How to Layer Necklaces: The 5cm Rule
To create a balanced, tangle-free necklace stack, structure your chains with distinct drop lengths.
- Spacing: Maintain a 3cm to 5cm gap between each chain length (for example: 40cm, 45cm, and 50cm).
- Texture Weight: Pair delicate curb or cable chains with slightly heavier snake or paperclip links. Combining different chain textures keeps individual strands separated.
- Anchor Piece: Use a heavier pendant or a pearl necklace as your middle or lowest layer to weight the set and keep it centered.
