THE DIAMOND GUIDE

Carat (abbreviated as 'ct') measures a diamond's physical weight rather than its visual diameter. One carat is equal to exactly 200 milligrams. While carat weight influences value, two diamonds of the exact same weight can look completely different depending on their proportions.

Does carat size matter?

Carat weight determines a stone's mass, but the way a diamond is cut dictates how it actually appears on the skin. A precise, well-proportioned cut maximizes the surface diameter and light return. This ensures that even smaller, more delicate weights—like a 0.2-carat stone—appear clean, bright, and distinct.

Clarity evaluates the internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface markings (blemishes) created during the diamond's growth process. The scale ranges from Flawless (FL) down to Included (I3).

What are the most valuable clarity grades?

The most valuable diamonds are those graded Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF). These stones contain absolutely no internal inclusions or surface blemishes under 10x magnification, representing the highest tier of structural purity.

Right below these rare classifications sit VVS (Very, Very Slightly Included) diamonds. Because their internal characteristics are completely microscopic, VVS stones offer an identical appearance of total visual purity to the naked eye, making them a practical choice for high-quality everyday wear.

What is the impact?

Clarity determines the visual purity of the stone. Our diamonds are graded VVS (Very, Very Slightly Included), meaning any internal characteristics are entirely microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. This ensures the diamond remains clear and free of visible imperfections in daily wear.

Colour measures the natural tint present within a white diamond. The industry standard scale established by the GIA runs alphabetically from D, representing completely colourless, down to Z, which indicates a noticeable light yellow or brown tint.

The Essential Diamonds are in the F–G range for their clean, bright appearance.

What are the most valuable colour grades?

The most valuable diamonds are those graded D, E, and F. These are completely colourless stones, prized because they have no trace of tint, allowing them to reflect light with absolute purity.

What is the impact?

Subtle shifts in colour tone directly alter how bright a diamond looks once set. While completely colourless stones are the rarest, diamonds in the near-colourless (G–H) range offer identical visual clarity to the naked eye when worn, making them a practical choice for everyday jewellery.

Cut refers to the precision, alignment, and polish of a diamond’s facets. It dictates how light enters the stone and reflects back to the eye, rather than referring to the raw shape of the stone itself.

What are the most prized cut grades?

The most prized diamonds are those graded Excellent. This grade represents the highest level of cutting precision, where the facet angles and symmetry align perfectly to reflect light with absolute efficiency, preventing any dullness or leakage.

Does cut matter more than carat size?

A diamond’s appearance on the skin relies on the balance of all 4 Cs, with cut playing the most critical role. For a round cut diamond, we select precise, well-proportioned cuts that maximize the surface diameter and light return. This ensures that even smaller, more delicate weights appear clean, distinct, and bright.

Materials and care

What is the Solitaire Collection made from?

Each piece is crafted in 9ct solid gold and set with a lab-grown diamond. Solid gold means the metal is gold alloy all the way through, so there is no plating to wear away.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined stones.

How is the diamond set?

The diamond is bezel set, held in a smooth metal rim that wraps around the stone. It sits low and secure, and the rim helps protect the edge of the diamond from knocks and snags, which makes it easy to wear every day.

Can I choose a different metal, stone or carat weight?

Yes. If you'd like a different material, such as white gold, 14ct or 18ct gold, a larger carat weight, or a gemstone like emerald or sapphire, get in touch with us and we'll talk you through the options.

You can also explore our Bespoke Service.

Can I wear it every day?

Yes, it's made to be worn often. Solid gold and diamond are both durable. Still, we recommend taking it off before swimming, heavy lifting, exercise and household cleaning, and putting it on after perfume, lotion and hairspray.

Does solid gold tarnish?

Only 24ct gold is pure enough to stay free of tarnish. Gold below 24ct, including our 9ct, is mixed with other metals for strength, and 9ct is 37.5% gold, with the rest made up of alloy metals.

Over time, those metals can react with air, moisture, sweat, skin oils, cosmetics and chemicals, and your piece may develop a soft patina. This is a natural part of wearing solid gold jewellery and only affects the surface. A gentle clean and a soft polishing cloth will bring back its shine.

How do I clean it?

Your piece only needs a gentle polish with a soft jewellery polishing cloth. Wipe it after wearing to remove oils and restore its shine, and avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.

Ethical sourcing

Where does the diamond come from?

The diamond is lab-grown, created using technology that replicates the conditions in which diamonds form naturally. All of our materials are conflict-free and sourced from Responsible Jewellery Council accredited suppliers.

Is solid gold a sustainable choice?

Solid gold is made to last. It's gold alloy all the way through, so it will not wear away and no base metal underneath to show through. It also doesn't rust or corrode, and over time it may develop a soft patina that a gentle polish with a soft cloth brings back to its shine. Because it holds up to everyday wear, you're not replacing it when a finish fades, which means fewer pieces made and fewer thrown away.

Our gold is sourced from Responsible Jewellery Council accredited suppliers, and each piece is made in small batches with a manufacturing partner that has certified ethical standards.

Choosing a piece you'll wear and love for a long time is one of the simplest ways to buy more sustainably.

Is a lab-grown diamond a sustainable choice?

Lab-grown diamonds offer a more traceable way to own a diamond. They're grown in a controlled laboratory rather than mined, so there's no large-scale excavation of land, and each stone can be traced back to where it was made. Each diamond grows from its own tiny diamond seed, then is individually cut, polished and graded, so every stone has its own character.

We pair it with solid gold and make each piece in small batches with a manufacturing partner that has certified ethical standards. Diamond and solid gold are both made to last, so your piece is designed to be worn often and kept for years.

Gifting

Does the Solitaire Collection arrive gift-ready?

Yes. Every piece arrives in our FSC® certified jewellery box with a velvet pouch, finished with a bow and ready to gift to yourself or someone you love. You can also add a personal handwritten note on the product page, and we'll include it with your order.

Can I add a personal note?

Yes. Add your message on the product page and we'll handwrite it and include it with the order.

How will my gift be delivered?

Orders are dispatched from Auckland the next business day, and New Zealand delivery usually takes 1–3 working days via NZPost. Solitaire Collection orders are sent signature required, so someone will need to be available to receive the parcel. If you're sending it as a surprise, choose a delivery address where someone can sign for it, such as a workplace.

Can I send it directly to the recipient?

Yes. Enter their address as the delivery address at checkout, and add a handwritten note so it arrives with your message. Just make sure someone will be there to sign for it.

What if my gift isn't quite right?

We offer returns and exchanges within 30 days of purchase for unworn items in original condition. Please contact us first, then send the piece back to us within that window. Items can be exchanged once.

For hygiene reasons, earrings can't be returned or exchanged, and bespoke pieces are made to order, so they aren't eligible either. See our Returns & Exchanges page for the full policy.
